Yes, Master!

I know its been two weeks since I’ve written, but I’ve been SWAMPED.  and guess what – I did it!  I made Master Student Designer!  Holy cow!

The goals were rough – for part time students it is $500 in services, $90 (18%) in retail, 90% or above attendances, 100% service time, 60% or better Request Guests, etc… but holy crap!  I made it!

I managed to somehowmake sure that my chair ALWAYS had someone in it!  During the month of April, there were two days when I did not have appointments on my books.  TWO!  One of those I had to reschedule someone due to an emergency and the other was the day that I left early because I wasn’t feeling well.

BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE: start booking now.  even if you aren’t on the floor.  get a calendar and plan ahead!  Tell everyone when you’ll be heading out onto the floor and start booking it now!

Trust me, you’d much rather be performing real services than working on a mannequin head every day!

I was so nervous last Thursday which was the cut off day because I was still feeling far away from my goal – $46 in services and $32 in retail to go…ARGH!  That number seems huge when a haircut & style is only $12!!  AND, I had someone scheduled to come in for a re-color since part of her color didn’t take the week before, so i just KNEW i had to wrap it up either before she got there, or after.  Then, she called me.  Rebecca stated that while she was getting the re-color, she also wanted a new cut & style ($12) and highlights/lowligts ($50) added in to it AND she was bringing her daughter in for a mani/pedi ($26)! whoooo hoooo – I love Rebecca!  She’s so super duper awesome & I’m glad she’s my friend!

When they got there, i had to pass the manicure/pedicure off to another student because there was no way I was going to have time to do it.  I only had 4 hours (and yes, i’m still slow as christmas) and we had to do her base color, which was going to take a little less than an hour.  Then, we needed to do the cut (which was so perfect for her) which took another 30-45 minutes.  Now, the highlights/lowlights were actually a little complicated because of the chunking we were trying to achieve and that took another 1 1/2 hours.  Then her daughter asked her to buy the polish from her toes & nails being polished since she didn’t actually get a mani/pedi – she just got a polish change because the poor thing didn’t know there was a difference…. ($17 retail).  Rebecca and I started talking about styling products that she was going to need versus what she had at home.  He style was a real piecey-choppy look that needed lots of definition.

so i recommended the Redken Water Wax for her hair because to me, it isn’t as sticky as some of the others and the Polishing Milk to tame her flyaways.  She agreed ($28 retail) and she was really trying to help me out, so she put me over the top on my retail!

I can’t tell you how happy and excited I was!  The whole month I just kept saying – “It’s Done”.  “It’s SO done”.  I almost quit.  I almost gave up because it just seemed SO DARN HARD that last two weeks.  I was half-way there on the 15th of the month.  i didn’t think i’d EVER get there.  Then Ms. Vera, our campus manager, invited me in to her office to give me a heads up on my numbers and where I stood.  She said she knew it was already done and that she had no doubts that i’d do it.

I had to step it up and finish!  I had so many other students & staff rooting for me, (and heaven knows i had talked so much smack about how i was going to be their first Master Designer) i had to!

I am the FIRST Master Student Designer at the campus, The FIRST Part Time Student, and the FIRST to do it in the first month of being on the Performance Floor!  I have set the Standard!  I’m very proud of myself.

That was a rough month!  I stayed busy!  While everyone else was getting to laugh and joke and take breaks on time – I was working with my clients.  When everyone else was getting to leave on time, I was staying over to finish up styles or clean my station.  While everyone else was getting to school between 5:15 & 5:30 and then setting up their stations, i was there early, getting my station ready, so that at 5:15 I could start my clients.  It was fun, rewarding and a ton of fun!  I have begun building a great clientele made up of my friends, co-workers, and the best – referrals!  LOVE IT!

I’m sure you want to know what I get for making Master – PRIZES!!!  lol.  I get a T-shirt, a certificate, 3 hours of pampering, a makeup kit, and I get to choose an awesome prize- the choices include a new Andis Pro Clipper, a pair of Rainbow Titanium Shears, A Hot Tools Set which includes a blow dryer & a marcel iron, or a 30 pc (i think)  brush set.  Oh, AND you get a special name tag, and I’ m all about being special…lol.   I want the Shears. they are super pretty.  I think the Andis clipper is probably more valuable – but i like the clippers I have right now, and not too many men are coming through those doors – besides, I can always get them next time 😉

I’ll take pictures of all my swag as soon as I get it!

So my plan is to use May to catch up on my State Board works since I had zero school time to practice since i had so many clients (YAY) and then make master again in June so I can qualify for the trip to the hair show in September.  Yes, Regency will pay for my travel, hotel & tickets in to the hair show, just for qualifying as a Master Designer in June or July!  So I’m claiming it now – I’m DONE!  then, after the show in September (which will be in Minnesota) I’ll come back in qualify again in December or January for the BIG show in March which is in Chicago – the ABS!  oh yes, it is SO done!  THEN, I’ll come back from ABS and Graduate!  YAY!

My next post is on Salon Faire – and I promise, there will be LOTS of Pictures!

“Tough as Nails” ain’t so Tough After All

You guessed it!  We’re in the Nails section – WHOOO HOOO.

1st nail is Sculptured, last 3 are tips & acrylic

Manicures, Pedicures, Acrylics, Sculptured, French Tips…oh, we’re doing it all!

Tried to get a better pic, doesn't look like it worked...

Loved doing the mani/pedi stuff too.  GO figure.   Feet don’t bother me, but some of the students just don’t care for it.  We’ve been practicing on each other, of course, so our hands and feet are all well taken care of now.  Well, except mine.  I don’t mind doing someone else’s feet – but you’re not touching mine!  I have to go to the foot doctor this Friday, which has been my biggest excuse for not letting anyone see my tootsies.

Doesn't it look like fun?

My favorite part is polishing and doing nail art – of course, we’re an O-P-I nail salon, so we some pretty great colors.

So far it is pretty basic.  Nothing too complicated, except the terminology.  There are lots of -chosis, hypo-, and other weird medical terms we are learning.

Mr. Maurice is turning out to be an alright instructor after all, I think we all just needed a good adjustment period.

People are getting upset because Regency is getting “back to the basics” and reinforcing the school’s dress code which seemed to have gotten a little lax lately.  Students are frustrated because they aren’t allowed to have their cell phones in class, but if Trena were here – they’d be sent home, not just asked to put them away.  I, for one, am glad they are getting stricter.  It was really getting frustrating watching people get away with the equivalent of  murder in the classrooms.  We actually had 2 students fall asleep – ASLEEP in class.  They were talked to later after being woken up, but umm.. yeah… I’d like to sleep too, but I’m not paying the money I am to sleep away my education.  If I’m that tired, I’ll just stay home thanks.

SOOO to update you on my progress so far – we’ve been schedule 297 hours, of which I’ve attended 295.77.  Almost perfect (it bugs the beegeesus out of me).  which, that hour or so that i’m missing is from a cumulation of minutes from the first 3 weeks of school when i was still getting used to clocking in and out.

Also, I get “introduced” to the Performance Floor on March 27 – WHOOOO HOOO.  As a part-time student, I will be able to take clients from 5:30 to 9:oo p.m. Monday through Thursday and then have our Rehearsal / Theory hours from 8-5 on Saturdays.

I got an explanation of this directly from Corporate last week and it makes a LOT of sense.  Daytime students will be on their floor rotations on Saturdays, so the floor WILL be open, however, Saturdays are when we as part – time students will be doing theory.  It just means we have to train our clients a little better to come in during the evening hours, after work, instead of having to a) leave work early or b) waste your Saturday waiting in a salon.  Totally doable.  If they tried to put daytime AND evening students on the floor on Saturdays, there wouldn’t be enough room.  There are 26 stations on the floor, so for a full day-time class of 30 students, that put 26 on the floor, two in the dispensary and two at the front desk… thus, part time students will need to be in the class room on those days.

I don’t think this will affect my goals of attaining Master Student Designer or the Star Rewards Program…

Also, we’ve gotten the “Go-Ahead” to start our Student Council.  YAY!  I am having a conference call with the campus manager and corporate later today to discuss the details and get the ball rolling.  YAYAYAYAYAYAAA  I can’t tell you all how excited I am to finally get this thing off the ground!

Of course, I’ll keep you posted – but its easier if you subscribe 🙂

Here’s a fun quote i’ll leave you with:

O-P-I Contest for All Regency Students

I know, I know – TWO POSTS?  IN ONE DAY??? SAY IT AIN’T SO!  I figured since it took soooo long to get the other one up, i’d go ahead and share this one – plus this one kind of only relates to January and if i waited til next week, the month would be half way over…So don’t forget to go to the last post and read about our tests!

This flyer was put up sometime in the last couple of weeks in December letting all of us know that there is an O-P-I contest going on at Regency Beauty Institute for a FABULOUS black bag.  I love bags.  I also love free stuff.  Oh, and did I mention earlier that I’m a bit competitive?

Contest Flyer

Here’s a better picture of the bag (i hope…lol)

The Bag

These are the requirements listed – not sure if you can read them or not.

The Rules

OK, In case you can’t read them in the picture – here they are:

  • The contest will run from January 2, 2010 to January 30, 2010.
  • The student who has the highest retail sales as a percent of service sales for the month at each campus will be awarded an O-P-I bag.
  • All students are automatically entered into the contest with each retail item sold
  • All items must be sold to a paying guest and not to a student.
  • On January 18th, the contest mid-point, the Performance Floor Manager will run a retail report and announce the top three performing students to date.
  • On February 1st, the Performance Floor Manager will run a retail report to determine the top performing student for the campus for January.
  • On February 2nd, the Performance Floor Manger will announce the winning student’s name during both roll calls (FT / PT), and award the prize.
  • In the event of a tie, a random drawing of those students will be made on Saturday, February 6th when FT and PT students are both in attendance.

Now, as much as I LOVE the fact that there will be ONE WINNER PER CAMPUS, and the ALL of the students are getting entered – it kinda sucks because it is based on retail, which – you probably guessed it, those of us in Workshop aren’t doing yet.  However – I have a feeling that by the time we get out on the Performance Floor, there will be more contests going on, so i’m cool with that.

I know some of you that read this are already out on the performance floor – I’d love to hear how you plan on making your moves toward winning this bag this month!  Is it harder to sell the O-P-I products since we give the free polish away with a manicure or pedicure?  Or does that make it easier?  Any input would be great!

And, just because it’s MY BLOG – i’m ending with a picture of my kitty.

HAPPIEST OF NEW YEARS TO YOU

(Editor’s Note – I apologize for the delay on this blog.  I’ve been having issues with the photos uploading and for some reason WordPress keeps crashing – but all is fixed now 🙂  YAY)

OH EMMM GEEE  – I PASSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I passed all of my tests and my practicals in hair cutting so i DO get to advance – whoooo hooo!  Not only did I pass – i blew those freaking tests out of the water!  I love Regency Beauty Institute!!

OK, let me back up a little.  Last week was mostly review for our test.  Saturday, we had to “test out” of hair cutting.  That means we had to do our Practical Exam where we actually went through the entire process of the cut.  Our cut for our Practical was the Solid Form.  Luckily, my friend Ali has no fear and volunteered to be my model for the test.  Everyone was responsible for bringing their own models.  AND, our models must have loved us because they had to be there at 8:30 on a Saturday morning!

The first part of our test was our practical exam.  We had to greet our clients, bring them to the back, drape them for a shampoo, escort them to the shampoo bowl, shampoo 3x & condition 1x – cover their hair with a towel, sanitize our shampoo station, then escort them to the chair, comb out the hair, section and perform the cut.  We were being watched almost the whole time.  When we were done with the cut, we were to sweep and sanitize our station quickly (this is very important – there should NEVER be ANY remnants of the hair you’ve cut by the time your client leave the chair) and have the instructor check our cuts (yay me – almost perfect – only one point in the cut!!)  Ali had a lot of layers, so I didn’t cut any of the shorter ones, only the ones that reached our initial guide line for the solid form.

Then, we had to blow dry and thermal style the hair.  ::WHEW::  Ali has a lot of hair – but it felt SO NATURAL to be behind the chair.

Once that was finished, we escorted our guests to the door.  I went a little further and started telling her about the Rewards program that Regency has – that way when I’m actually out on the floor, I’ll be in the habit of doing it.  🙂

Ali left and it was time for us to get ready for our written test.

I had made flash cards the night before so my husband could help me study.  When we were in review mode during class last week, our instructor gave us what topics to study and the pages they were on.  There were NO SURPRISES on this test.  For that, I was truly grateful.  So, after my practical exam, I offered up my flash cards to the other girls in the class so they could do some crash studying before we went to lunch.

We broke for lunch and most of us walked down to Albasha – this amazing greek restaurant around the corner – and got our grub on.  It was SO good.

Then when we were finished, we went back in the classroom to wait for our written exam – dun Dun DUN – we studied the flash cards a little more and then it was time to take our test.  Imagine our surprise when we learned it was THREE separate tests instead of just one test!  There was a test on hair cutting, a test on trichology, and a test on thermal styling.

We finished our tests and waited for our grades – I scored a 100 on trichology, a 96 on haircutting, and a 102 on thermal styling!  SWEET!!  The only question I missed on haircutting (there were 25 questions) was about which grip controls the still blade on your shears – the answer is the finger grip, but i absentmindedly put thumb grip.  i knew it as soon as I turned it in and could have kicked myself!

Once everyone turned their tests in, we were told we could do what we wanted to each other (mani-pedis, cuts, shampoos, waxes, etc.) so one of my classmates asked me to cut her hair.  YAY!  I started getting ready to shampoo my classmate’s hair when all of a sudden – here comes one of the instructors, she tells us to come back to the class real quick because she had given us the wrong trichology exam.  WHAT?!?

Evidently, they split trichology into two parts – Trichology A and Trichology B – (how very original) and evidently she gave us the Trichology B test when we were actually supposed to take the Trichology A test because we haven’t taken the second part of Trichology yet! – HUH?  But I got a 100 on it!  Oh well – had to take another test – luckily it was only 10 questions – and guess what?  I got a 100 on that test too!  HAHAH so there.

NOW we can go get down on the shampoo bowl & cut her hair 🙂

The other girls did a pedicure and some waxing and I cut and styled my classmate’s hair. : here are some photos – their faces have been blurred to protect their fabulousness.

BEFORE

AFTER

and here’s another fun one…lol.  this student wanted a pedicure – but the student who was going to perform it told her to wash her feet first… so she was washing them in the shampoo bowl! – don’t worry – we sanitized it THOROUGHLY after she was done…hahah

Wash Your Feet!

Over all it was a good Saturday!  Almost everyone passed all of their tests and I think everyone passed their practicals.  We’re still waiting on information for Student Counsel, but hey, we’re only there part time so maybe we don’t get to have one… i don’t know.   I have another post coming right behind this one about a contest that’s being run through Regency, so STAY TUNED!!

Feel free to subscribe over on the right side – that way you automatically know when I’ve been writing 🙂

Oh, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you want to know or what you’re thinking about this experience  too!!

Take a Look Around (Shreveport Campus Tour)

Ok, so I know I told you all I was going to review the kit on Sunday – but I had forgotten completely that I was hosting a cookie exchange that day!  However, I did remember to take lots of pictures of our campus on Saturday, So i’m going to give you a virtual tour instead:)  AND, you’ll kind of get to see the kit briefly!  All is not lost.

Saturday was a LONG day – we were there from 8:30 to 5, we got to meet the “day walkers” (j/k they were the full-time students who are currently on Saturday rotation – and they are AWESOME and FRIENDLY and HELPFUL – )

I did my first “layered” cut on Ms. Kim – whoo hooo!  She’s so pretty.  If there is anything I’m taking away from this class it is to TAKE MY TIME and don’t rush through it.  I see some of the other students who want to get done just for the sake of being done, but I take my sweet time because I want to make sure I’m cutting properly – trust me, i’m pretty sure my clients will rather it be done correctly over quickly, not saying i’m taking two hours to cut long layers or anything…lol

SO!  On to the tour o f my Regency Beauty Institute Shreveport Campus – oh, and all of these are taken with my iPhone, so pardon the quality 🙂

Entryway –  this is the first thing you see when you walk in to Regency Beauty Institute, be it to make an appointment, or come in to sign up for classes, or on your way down the hall to go to class.  This is where the POS (Point-of-Sale) computers are and where all appointment, follow-up appointments, and retail sales are made.

To the right of the entryway is our product display.  As you can see, we are a Redken retailer (YES!  LOVE THEM) and an O-P-I Nail Product retailer – You get a free bottle of polish with a mani or pedi – which is pretty awesome too!

If you were to take an immediate right past the Retail section, you’d be walking in to the Salon area.   We have 5 or 6 rows of salon chairs / mirrors/ stations – whatever you wish to call them – for us to provide hair services.

To your left you’d see our dispensary – this is where all the chemicals and towels are kept.

At the beginning of your hair service, you will likely be taken to our shampoo area.  Here you will see our Shampoo Bowls/Chairs and our Dryers – so neat and pretty!

And of course – our Shampoo/Conditioner Bar where we stylist students select our shampoo & conditioner.

We also have a facial room, but there was a client in there so I couldn’t snap photos there because I didn’t want to disturb them – but its pretty awesome.

Our mani/pedi area was also occupied – but there are three or four mani/pedi chairs in that area that are uber comfy.

Now, if you were coming to the back of the building for class, right past the reception area you would pass my favorite spot – the Coffee area!  It is on the right.  You’ll notice that we make/serve Community Coffee – which is produced right here in Louisiana, and happens to be one of my favorites!

Directly at the end of the first hall is the Kit Display – (see, I told you you’d kind of get to see the kit).  Except for the bottom row – those are prizes reserved for Student Master Designers (part of the STAR Program).

To the right and left are classrooms (which I didn’t take photos of) and down the other hall are our lockers.  So Shiny!  And roomy!!!

At the end of the hall on the left is our break room 🙂  YAY Snack Machines!

this concludes our tour of the Shreveport Campus.  I’ll try and remember to update this post with photos of the mani/pedi stations & the facial/waxing room – I’ll take those photos tonight 🙂

Isn’t it Pretty?!?
